Panel 4: Träume von Räumen [Dreams of spaces]

At a time when wars are once again shifting national borders in the immediate vicinity, we will first look at filmic practice in the relationship between the centre and the periphery, starting with the question of whether film or society is in a state of upheaval. These are questions of perspective. A look at the map already says something about voting behaviour in Germany and thus colours rural spaces, places, villages, provinces and our perception politically. The spaces in which we live and grow up are identity-forming. It is reasonable to assume that these spaces and places also influence how we orientate ourselves politically. What effect do aesthetics have on us, what narratives are attached to them? How can a phenomenological approach tell/show something about political upheavals, shifts and change? This panel deals with the spatial-political and aesthetic relationship between centre and periphery, on a rural, urban and international level, using various cinematic approaches, social and cultural practices. In the spirit of the slogan ‘think global, act local’, we will focus on films, projects, associations and movements in, beyond and from East Germany.
