The Werkleitz Festival 2021 New World Dis/Order in Halle (Saale) presents 44 new media art productions from the international scholarship program European Media Art Platform (EMAP) initiated by Werkleitz and supported by Creative Europe.
44 artists and artist groups have been working and researching for 4 years at 11 institutions of the European Media Art Platform on urgent challenges of our times. They are investigating climate change, ocean pollution and water quality. They are creating artificial beings as metaphors for post-human maritime lifeforms. They are examining the empathy and swarm intelligence of robots or generating tulip patterns from Bitcoin rates. They are building subversive tools with which citizens can resist digital surveillance and they are analyzing the logic of neo-liberalism. Some are even developing solutions for our societies to operate more fairly. All artists are demonstrating and reflecting a creative, alternative use of old and new technologies. Concurrently to the exhibition Werkleitz will host a three-day conference. Renowned theoreticians and researchers will reflect and discuss with artists the increasing effects of technology on our daily lives, work and the environment as well as the interconnections between globalization and capitalism. The conference participants will present their ideas on how to improve the treatment of the planet, its inhabitants and resources. The festival center will be the former local headquarters of the Ministry of State Security (Stasi) in Halle (Saale).
