On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War, the Werkleitz Festival 2025 puts a spotlight on the current challenges facing peasant livelihoods worldwide. It focuses on issues such as the ongoing privatization of land, the future of food, and the ecological consequences of globalized agriculture.

The festival takes place in conjunction with the exhibition Planetarische Bauern [Planetary Peasants] at the Moritzburg Art Museum Halle (Saale). Artistic interventions in the zoological collection of the Central Magazine (ZNS) form a central part of the festival. The festival presents works by painter Kateryna Aliinyk, photographer Jochen Lempert, and spatially staged films by artists such as Nina Fischer & Maroan el Sani and Salka Tiziana. In an interactive media installation by Clemens Stachel and Wolfgang Konrad, experts from around the world engage in debates on global food security.
The festival symposium on climate, water, and soil takes place on May 27 at the Leopoldina, in collaboration with the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the KollektiV Landwende.
Film screenings are held in the historic lecture hall of the Central Magazine and at the Zazie Cinema.
