Generations on Screen

The seven films in this programme tell personal stories of relationships while also tracing the underlying connections that exist between generations. What all the works have in common is a narrative approach that starts in the private sphere and, through everyday personal experience, reveals something larger than the purely private.
The films explore what it means to share a life over time – a life shaped by compromise, yet still animated by the rhythm of a waltz. They tell of being thrown from one system into another and of the search for a balance between doubt, conformity and self-denial. Again and again, they explore the effects of intergenerational trauma and ask how this cycle might be broken.
For all their diversity – ranging from documentary and experimental film to animation – these short films are united by a desire for dialogue and understanding, especially where different generations no longer seem to speak the same language.
