Zeitsprünge

No other medium has developed such an intimate relationship with time as film. It’s the only medium that not only describes time but embodies it: every shot is a decision about duration, every cut a leap through what has been and what is yet to come. The short film programme Zeitsprünge [Time Leaps] makes use of precisely this quality, bringing together films that enable us to experience time in radically different ways.
A man trains his voice because he knows he will soon lose it. A father comes to terms with the pain of his son’s death by completing his flipbook film and giving an ending to an unfinished story. People meet in search of fleeting moments and the meaning of life. Some find fulfilment in the regularity of everyday life; others pull the emergency brake and search for ways to slow down and save time – paradoxically, all at once. Still others grapple with the almost impossible question of how our generation can leave future civilizations a warning about radioactive waste whose half-life exceeds our capacity to communicate across generations.
Although none of the films offers a clear answer to the question of what time is, they all give us time to see.

Film discussion with Ann Carolin Renninger, Marie-Catherine Theiler, and Juliane Jaschnow, moderated by Luc-Carolin Ziemann.

Films in original version with German subtitles; German-language films with English subtitles.
