The television news programme Ozon, which examined environmental and scientific subjects, was first broadcast on 21 November 1989 in East German television and was seen as an accomplishment of the citizens’ movement in the GDR that drew attention to massive environmental destruction in the country. After reunification the show was continued in a new format by Berlin-Brandenburg Broadcasting until 2016. The programme from 2 January 1991 focused on the secondary copper mill in Helbra. With the help of West German companies, the August Bebel Mill run by the Mansfeld AG was to be shut down and replaced by a new electronic scrap recycling facility. The Environmental Group Helbra protested against this, citing the existing dioxin pollution of the soil in Helbra, which had recently been scientifically verified.
