Jan Schuijren

Born in 1964, he lives and works as a freelance curator in Amsterdam. He studied sociology and undertook postgraduate studies in new media. From 1992 to 2001, Jan Schuijren worked at the Netherlands Media Art Institute, Montevideo/Time Based Arts, where he was responsible for international exhibition collaborations and the video collection. Since 2002, he has worked as an independent curator in the field of visual arts, specialising in media art. He conceives, develops and presents international exhibition projects as well as film and video programmes. In 2004, he presented the international group exhibition Drawn by Reality – Encapsulated in Life at the Wood Street Galleries + SPACE, Pittsburgh, PA, USA www.drawnbyreality.info. This year, his 11-part film and video programme Sex and Sadness was presented as part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam at Witte de With – centre for contemporary art Rotterdam and at Platform Garanti in Istanbul. He is currently putting together the programme for a 40 m² Urban Screen in Amsterdam, on which art will be presented in public space 18 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Jan Schuijren is a lecturer at the Minerva Academy of Fine Arts, Groningen, and a member of the awards committee of the Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, Amsterdam, and the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, Brussels.
