Everyday objects become so familiar through their use that we take them for granted. In archaeology, methods have been developed to examine the material remains left behind by the producers and users of past eras. Especially when it comes to prehistoric societies, the classification of these tangible remains plays a major role. The everyday objects in the “Evidence of Settlement” collection offer insight into a society of the recent past that no longer exists in this form.
Artifacts directly or indirectly related to the preparation, consumption, or storage of chicken eggs are well-represented in the collection. The work “Everyday Objects Reflect Culture” highlights the egg as a staple food in the culture of Halle-Neustadt as reflected in the artifacts. To this end, objects related to the theme were selected and arranged in a chronological and aesthetically coherent sequence. The distinctive range of shapes, colors, and materials found in GDR products evokes a bygone era. With the passage of more than 25 years, these everyday objects are viewed anew and detached from their once-unnoticed taken-for-granted nature. In recognizing them, the viewer senses an echo of past experiences.
