Time in flux – time as a being
The window is the apparent boundary between two times. Inside: darkness, stillness, an eye that gazes. Outside: movement, light, the world. Yet the photographic image defies the certainty of things. The contours dissolve, objects become streaks, as if time itself had laid its hand upon the image... Nothing remains in focus, because ultimately nothing remains. What we see is not a moment – but rather its duration. A brief demonstration that the world does not consist primarily of things, but perhaps of transitions. Time in flux. Instead of understanding time merely as an abstract concept, it appears here and there as an active, feeling, or even suffering being. Francisco de Goya takes up this motif in his work ‘Saturn Devouring His Son’ and transforms time into an eerie, relentless, indeed destructive force.
