617 GARAGEN, Ulrike Hannemann

In this photographic project, Ulrike Hannemann explores that urban fringe area of Wittenberg where, between the 1960s and 1980s, a sprawling garage complex was built alongside a prefabricated housing estate. The entire site has since almost completely disappeared. The photographs document the site through detailed impressions: the interiors of garages still in use, individual sections of buildings and the immediately adjacent landscape. The images show isolated close-ups – sometimes hints of current users, sometimes fragments of a time already past. In her subsequent engagement with the photographic material, Ulrike Hannemann printed some of the images in black and white on various photocopiers and photographed them again. This transformation creates an additional sense of distance and plays with the subtle appearance of the past. 617 Garages explores photographic images as repositories of time – situated between documentation, reconstruction and memory.
