Sebastian Herzau’s work on the theme of time comprises 500 individual images. The basis and starting point for this was the memory of a landscape motif, reduced to two planes separated by a horizon. How does his motif change over time if I paint it again and again, using only my memory of it as a template?
How do the resulting images influence the creative process of the subsequent images?
What influence does the prolonged mental and physical engagement with a motif over a long period of time exert on his painting? The gesture of repetition is not intended to express a copy or reproduction; it is a representation of an interaction, constantly making a new beginning. More crucial is the blending of past and present in perception, which transcends the past and translates it into a timeless present, the experience of which the paintings can become.
