Evidence of Settlement

When dealing with collections, the question of how to organize, archive, and exhibit them always arises. A strategy is needed to keep track of the large number of objects. The artist treated the collection Evidence of Settlement as the estate of an unknown person. By rummaging through the archives of this collection—in a sense, digging through the relics of a life—a complex psychogram of a person unknown to us emerged. The fictional situation shown here is a narrative interpretation of the objects treated as an estate.

The slide is mounted at eye level inside the display window and is inserted into a light blue slide viewer. Looking into it, you yourself become a participant in the narrative and at the same time penetrate the intimate sphere of the two people depicted. Who were they and where were they? What were they doing there and what did they have with them? Like other photographic images, the slide captures a moment in time. In the installation, the image overlays the arranged collection objects. These expand on the situation visible in the image. Are the exhibited objects the companions of the two people? A previously untold story is invented here.
