“Sooner or later, your paintings will fall off the walls,” a gallery owner said to Lenia Hauser after discovering the countless layers and mixtures of materials—pigment, plaster, acrylic, oil paint and varnish—that form the framework of her paintings. Ever since then, the idea of the transience of art has stayed with her — she finds herself asking the question again and again: must art be durable? Shouldn’t it also be allowed to age, break, dissolve, even disappear? Isn’t it much more a question of ‘how’ the artwork will change?
