Through her use of barrel painting, Sophia Mix draws on Christian depictions of saints. For ‘holy’ derives from ‘healing’. And that which brings about well-being is healing. Nothing influences our relationship with our bodies in Europe as profoundly and subtly as our Christian heritage. To reclaim the archaic images of prehistoric matriarchies—long suppressed yet evoking the history of the female gender—she designed a moon goddess adorned with symbols of power from various cultures. She holds the ancient Egyptian ankh, the triple-crossed staff, a golden sphere, a carafe of water and a book in her six hands. Her halo consists of 28 phases of the moon, rotating on its side, moving from new to full. The 28 days reflect the 13-month years of matriarchal cultures, whose calendars are based on the menstrual cycles of female bodies. The position of the current zodiac sign is indicated within the body of a bird.
