market sentiments Barbara Musil (Filmstill)

In Barbara Musil’s four-minute animation garish red and yellow lines cover satellite images of Estonian landscapes. The lines relate to actual real estate registers of land which has been sold or is currently for sale. Market sentiment is an economic term that refers to a prevailing mood of investors as to anticipated price development in a market. In Estonia, formerly a part of the Soviet Union which became independent in 1991, the current market sentiment is “euphoric” thanks to economically liberal laws. At an increasingly fast pace and in increasingly dense patterns the lines overlay forests, fields and meadows, rhythmized by the melancholic music of Arvo Pärt. The cutting up of the landscape that marks its transformation into property makes the pressures of an abstract market visible.
