Leuna100 at Kino Zazie

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Leuna-Werke and the 80th anniversary of Buna-Werke. To commemorate these milestones the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) and Werkleitz will be exploring the history and present of the two major chemical companies of the former East German republic. Following up on the Werkleitz Filmraum, which was on display in the museum from July to October, the two-part film programme Von der Kohle zur Cloud [From Coal to the Cloud] will be presented at Kino Zazie as the second and final event of Leuna100. This new selection of historical and contemporary short films will once again examine the themes of chemical production, automation, labour and labour movements in connection with globalized raw material acquisition and the development of computer technology. From British coal mines in the early 20th century, to petroleum extraction by the West German Aral AG company in the Libyan desert in the 1960s, to outdated carbide production in Schkopau in the 1980s, to illegal gold mines and electronic waste recycling in Ghana today, the film programme focuses on a range of historical periods and geographical locations to shed light on the contexts of chemical production and microelectronics. A look at these two central industries in contemporary consumption-based society reveals the bright and dark sides of technological progress. The juxtaposition of artistic, documentary, corporate and image films offers a great range of perspectives on the profound transformation of regional and international structures in the last 100 years and provides a basis for further discussion.
