For a long time, influenced by Direct Cinema, interfering with existing reality was frowned upon. But even the early days of feature-length documentaries involved interference, arrangements, and staging, as demonstrated by the classic Nanook of the North by veteran filmmaker Robert Flaherty.
But how do I stage my protagonists? How do I give instructions? What should my limits be, or are there none?
Other topics include the encounter between filmmaker and protagonist; the autobiographical and the foreign, approximation, projection; the construction of cinematic characters; how authentic do I want to be, how “honest” do I want to be, how fictional do I want to become? From the personal to the socially relevant/universal.
