Although documentary forms are at the forefront of further training, it is often the case that staging skills are also required in this area: whether through hybrid forms such as docu-fiction or simply to show a real protagonist in the film performing an action instead of narrating it. Over the past ten years, a new fictionalization of narrative forms in documentary film has also become noticeable. Fictional design principles such as shot-reverse shot can be found in award-winning documentary film productions. Andres Veiel, with his award-winning work “Blackbox BRD” but also his later documentary feature films, proves to be a pioneer of this development.
The workshop therefore offers various staging approaches: - How do I develop characters with depth and profile?
- What is important when casting?
- Staging and directing actors
- Staging and directing amateurs
- Improvisation - Resolution strategies
The practical part includes, for example, setting up and conducting an interview situation (camera, lighting, sound, staging). In addition, the basics of film design tools and film analysis will be discussed using selected film examples provided by the instructor.
