Personen

Where borders divide, humanity connects. For the volunteers of the ROSA - ROLLING SAFESPACE association, this becomes a tangible reality. Founded in 2021, a fluctuating group of young women in the refugee camps along Greece's EU external border is committed to helping those who suffer most from the adverse conditions of flight and EU asylum policy: women and children. From a fixed base, the volunteers commute between the camps in a converted truck, offering specific support services, providing concrete assistance and promoting networking among those affected. In doing so, they encounter boundaries in many ways – internal and external, obvious and unexpected. Their actions raise questions about helping itself – which, in its pure, somewhat naive and activist form, can also harbour unexpected risks. How aware is the group of their whiteness, their Eurocentric perspective and the privileged circumstances from which they come as they approach their work? How can volunteer work be made sustainable for the local people? Could it even pose a threat to those involved under certain circumstances?
The film closely observes the development of the aid project and provides moving insights into the emotional worlds of its protagonists. Moments of happiness and frustration, professionalism and overload, mutual understanding and rejection are closely intertwined, draining their strength or giving them unforgettable experiences. The cinematic view of this ambivalent reality allows the audience to participate in their emotional journey and thus enables a critical examination of the complex topic of helping, also in relation to one's own actions.
