Future Fossils

For this work, Philipp Keidler treated various crops and products derived from them with sodium silicate. During the treatment, the chemical penetrates the pores of the plant structures and silicifies there, gradually transforming the organic structure into an inorganic one, so that the objects will eventually turn to stone. The apple branch, the wooden beam, the rose branch, the coconut, and the roof batten are a selection of countless products that, through cultivation and further processing, represent a snapshot of a globalized world. The objects thus serve as a kind of time capsule.
