Whether fictional, observational documentary or investigative, whether political, autobiographical, experimental or poetic: a large part of filmmaking involves encountering and engaging with people who become cinematic characters, protagonists or interviewees. One’s own biography can also provide inspiration. One can take on a role oneself, creating a fictional self—or that of a protagonist—and work with the variations and possibilities this entails. The experience of navigating the tension between authenticity and fiction, whether in one’s own life or that of another, can be translated into compelling dramatic narratives. Ultimately, the focus is on the relationship and/or separation between author and narrator.
