Eberhard Klöppel, born in Berlin in 1940 and resettled in Hettstedt at the age of five, spent much of his childhood in the Mansfeld region. It was this sense of home that drew him back to the region later in life as a photojournalist. His work for the Neue Berliner Illustrierte took him to the Mansfeld region on various photo-reportage assignments. Klöppel continuously documented the working and living conditions of the region from the 1970s onwards, exploring the balance between closeness and distance to people and subjects in his reportages. Klöppel’s work represents a significant contribution to the visual culture of the Mansfeld region in the late GDR.
