Die Stimme des Ingenieurs

A man speaks from off-screen. We hear isolated words, some articulated with great effort, seemingly devoid of meaning. Only gradually do we realize that a voice recording is taking place. Slowly, the film opens a window onto the life of the man speaking into the microphone. Because of a progressive illness, Konrad Siegers will lose his voice. He resists this fate by rigorously training his speech muscles every day. At the same time, he is feeding a speech-generating computer with recordings of his voice, preparing for the moment when he will no longer be able to speak for himself. An inescapable reality hangs over the film, which renders it tangible through both meticulous observation and a quiet sense of humor.
