10 minutes
In this video work, 10 people set aside 10 minutes of their time. However, the 10 minutes are not predetermined; instead, each participant says aloud when they feel a minute, two minutes, and so on, have passed. Once they have reached and announced 10 minutes, the video ends for that person. In this way, the participants are gradually faded out. The video ends when the last participant indicates that 10 minutes have passed. Technically, this is a time-production method. The participants indicate when 10 minutes are up; they therefore produce the time interval. Reaching the 10 minutes more quickly indicates a relative overestimation of duration; the 10 minutes are reached after just 7 minutes and 26 seconds (for the participant with the shortest interval), so 7 minutes and 26 seconds felt like 10 minutes. Reaching the 10-minute mark more slowly (for one participant after 13:07 minutes) suggests an underestimation of the duration; the actual 13:07 minutes felt like 10 minutes. Who we are and how we feel right now has shaped these 10 people’s perception of time.

10 Minutes – 10 Years
A 10-year leap. Of the 10 original participants, 8 are still willing to set aside 10 minutes of their lives to be filmed. The passage of 10 years is also evident in the fact that Björn Drenkwitz finds it difficult to recognise some of the people, such has been the physical transformation. 10 years have profoundly changed people’s outward appearance. The two 10-minute intervals are, of course, snapshots of their state of mind. Interestingly, the participant who had the shortest time of 7:26 minutes in the first recording produced the longest time of the remaining 8 people after 10 years (15:00 minutes; i.e. more than double the duration). Is this merely due to the snapshot, or is there a profound transformation behind it? We observe the perceived self of 10 minutes from the outside, twice at intervals of 10 years, and wish to learn more about these women and men. I am my time. How do we arrive at our sense of time?
