Richard Serra, artist and filmmaker, born in 1939 in San Francisco • Studied at the University of California (Berkeley) and Yale University (New Haven) • 1964: spent time in Rome, influenced by ‘arte povera’ • 1966: moved towards ‘process art’, exhibitions in the USA and Europe • 1968: worked with new materials – rubber and neon • 1969: Sculptures based on the actual weight of steel plates • Since the late 1960s, films in collaboration with Bob Fiore and Joan Jonas • Large-scale sculptures in Corten steel for outdoor spaces • Extensive exhibitions worldwide, including a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1986.
