Unfortunately, in German productions – particularly in documentary filmmaking – too little attention is paid to sound. To avoid time-consuming post-production sound editing and the resulting cost overruns, a clean sound recording is essential for the design of the soundtrack. The workshop covers the fundamentals of sound recording technology from both a theoretical and practical perspective. This includes:
- Principles of auditory perception and their impact on the design of the soundtrack in film and video
- The interplay of speech, music, sound effects and ambient sound
- Sound dramaturgy, sound perspective, continuity
- Requirements for documentary sound recording
- Room acoustics, selection criteria for the use of microphones
- Introduction to the use of sound equipment, recording devices and mixing desks
- Basics of audio connection technology, balanced and unbalanced cable connections
- Preparations for filming, logistics of sound recording equipment
- Working on set, boom mic, camera settings
- Wireless microphones, principles of wireless transmission of audio signals
- Level control of audio signals on digital camera recorders
- Principles of digital sound recording technology
- Principles of file-based audio production
