How do people who work in fully automated industrial plants cope with their environment? That is the question that this film, commissioned by Chemische Werke Hüls AG, attempts to answer. Against the backdrop of what was then one of Europe's most modern synthetic rubber plants in Marl, a foreman, a worker, a shift supervisor, and an engineer go about their work. They reflect on their relationship to the huge plant and emphasize the control function of humans: “The machines work for us, not the other way around.” Hüls AG was formed in 1953 from I.G. Farben, which was dissolved after the end of National Socialism. After many changes of ownership and renaming, the Marl plant became a “chemical park” in 1998 and is now the largest site of Evonik Industries.
