the pirate edition

DE 2000

A tailor in the nearby small town of Calbe was comissioned by the artist to copy a suit designed by Prada, Milano, and a shirt by Gieves & Hawkes, London. Advertisements extracted from fashion magazines were used as models. Both paper patterns were published for further copying, as a supplement to the "Schénebecker Volksstimme” and as a give-away poster. Olaf Nicolai wore the suit and the shirt during the exhibition’s opening. The globalised market economy functions by taking advantage of the differences between supply and demand, or, put differently, the economic gradient between various regions. In Olaf Nicolai’s work, aspects of economy are addressed in various ways. This project focuses on the gradient and the image transfer between urban and rural areas in relation to availability of manpower, expertise, range of commodities on offer and the symbolic production of value.
