My Name is Oona

US 1969

My Name is Oona is a lyric evocation of the inner and outer worlds of Gunvor Nelson’s daughter Oona. Produced with the assistance of Steve Reich, the soundtrack consists of an endless series of words spoken by Oona and repeated over and over. Images of the girl playing, petting a horse, later riding in the forest, are superimposed and looped. The film creates an image of childhood that is more troubling than it is idealistic. “I think that her and my childhood worlds are mixed together here. As a child you feel relatively safe in your own world, but everything else is mysterious and terrifying – maybe there are monsters and trolls out there, even if you’ve never seen them.” (Gunvor Nelson)
