fusion

DE 2000

fusion is made possible by a basic operative practice. The smallest units of publication, FUSION pages, are printed individually on the pages of the profligate variety of pre-existing print media. In return for their free provision of space, these media are offered a frictionless service: the FUSION pages are transmitted to the media partner, ready for print and completely free of charge. Interviewees and writers, on the other hand, are provided with a free channel of public representation.

fusion thus operates without a fixed publishing machinery or fixed medial space. Indeed, it operates from a nomadic editorial domicile. These are the means whereby it reaches a maximal measure of artistic flexibility, poly-disciplinarity and diversity of readership.

By positioning itself on permanently altering media territories, it brings together the readerships of periodicals of the most varied orientations. To read an entire FUSION issue, is to read one's way through an array of different periodicals in a physical internet made of ink and paper. In this way it challenges the rigid castes of specialisations and media-constructed readerships - their preconceptions, discourses and ideologies. Through its innovative technologies of dissemination it is, quite naturally, a magazine for all.

fusion as editorial nomadism

Linz, OK-Centrum of Contempory Arts (Oktober 1999 - February 2000): fusion's basic infrastructure was laid at its first editorial domicile in the context of the international exhibition „Social Machine Money“ (O.K-Centre for Contemporary Art, Linz). From this base it began to generate texts going out to periodicals in Germany, Russia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Sweden and Austria. Participating periodicals include, among others, Web-Gallery of Art magazine Hamburg (project of the month, December 1999), the Viennese art magazines Springerin and Eikon International Journal for New Media and Photography, the daily newspaper ÖN in Linz, nu: The Nordic Art Review in Stockholm, and the daily taz (tageszeitung) in Germany. Parallel to its print publications, fusion's virtual domicile was constructed and inhabited at http://www.fusion.ok-centrum.at

Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien (April 2000): This FUSIONissue is a partnership with the programme „Gespräche“ which took place in the context of the 25th anniversary of this institution.

Art-Moscow and the Regions (16 - 21 May 2000): This FUSION issue represents the medial interaction of the International Art Fair Art-Moscow players with and to their media counterparts. Newspapers and periodicals which declared their interest are networked into the art fair and its attending fusion-organised conference. It was provided the opportunity for participation of regional art scenes through a video installation at this special fusion booth.

Werkleitz Biennale (5 - 9 July 2000): The FUSION issue dedicated to the 4th Biennial Werkleitz deals with subjects like the establishment of a network and strategies of representation on the basis of the various experiences of the Biennale participants.
