FLÄCHENLAND, FORTLAUFEND Exhibition of Stephanie Kiwitt at Schloss Köthen

21.11.23

Stephanie Kiwitt is exhibiting her works FLÄCHENLAND and FORTLAUFEND at the Historical Museum in Köthen Castle. The photographs in the two series on exhibition were taken in Saxony-Anhalt.
The book FLÄCHENLAND (2020 - 2022) will be published by Spector Books.
Stephanie Kiwitt teaches at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle as a professor of communication design/photography. In her photo series Flächenland and Fortlaufend, the artist shows changes in places and people that she has documented on excursions through Saxony-Anhalt. In her colorful photographs, she focuses on the habitats that are considered home to the majority of the local population. In this way, the cultivation and urban sprawl of a region becomes visible, the description of which as an expanse of land can not only be read in a value-neutral way, but also includes the absence of urban structures in the public use of the word.

In her explorations of these landscapes, Stephanie Kiwitt is guided by place names, literary images or regional news; the arrangement of the photographs taken en passant follows the impressions gained in the process. As a counterpart to these stock photographs, the black-and-white images in the series Fortlaufend are shown, which capture changes in detail: Transformations of aged or even newer building fabric, plastered brickwork or new decor, open or closed window niches and door reveals. Stephanie Kiwitt, who recently presented her research in Saxony-Anhalt at the Werkleitz Festival at Schloss Wiederstedt in the installation S. Anders leben, will be present at the opening of the exhibition.

For the Werkleitz Festival 2023 - My Precious, Stephanie spoke to residents in Sandersleben about their village. Texts from the resulting work S. Anders leben. Eine Handlung in Gesprächen will be performed by Stephanie Kiwitt together with locals from Sandersleben, Wiederstedt, Hettstedt and Halle in a staged reading as part of the exhibition, as they did during the festival.
