Künstliche Diamanten

DE 2013

Artificial diamonds depicts the manufacturing process of artificial diamonds at Vollstädt Diamant GmbH from start to finish. The company was founded by the mineralogist Heiner Vollstädt, who began his research into artificial diamonds 40 years ago at the Central Institute for Physics of the Earth in the former GDR. Since the late 1970s, the production of artificial diamonds had been a prestigious project of the GDR government, which aimed to end the country's dependence on diamond imports from the USSR or the West. After reunification, research at the institute was discontinued; Vollstädt moved some of the machines to a disused military camp outside Potsdam, where he continues to work on the production of artificial diamonds as a private entrepreneur
