Cube 17-96, Travel Object

Thom Barth 's installation "Travel Object", a dominant but lightweight cuboid in space, is surrounded by a montage of numerous magenta transparencies and lyrics that explicitly refer to travel and memories. Defined by him as a virtual cube, the glued together photocopies indicate a uniformly image-centered version of the world which the viewer, with the experience that the object is really not a cube, can traverse with shifting perspectives. In the interaction between the distant central axial perspective and a sum of different views, the journey coalesces into a reminiscent reproduction of images. The presence of benches makes the space into a neutral waiting room, while the installation room itself seems to be the subject of a journey. The differences of the memories are thus based on internal definitions.
