The film, which was made against the backdrop of the fall of the Wall, has not lost any of its power or interpretive layers to this day. "Wir sind das Volk [We are the people]," one of the leitmotifs of the peaceful demonstrations in the GDR in 1989, is currently being aggressively misused by the New Right. The film "points to the historical change and at the same time draws attention to the responsibility towards history: By blasting historical facts out of their context and placing them in new constellations, the assembled footage becomes the burning mirror of a historical consciousness that understands history as a sequence of time. By addressing time and change, continuity and innovation, past and present, the assembled sequence of times shows itself to point beyond concrete political references as an allegory of history: ‘Alles wandelt sich [Everything changes]’".
