Intervista (Finding the Words)

FR 1998

At the age of 23 the art student Anri Sala travelled from Paris to his hometown Tirana, the capital of Albania. In his parents’ home he finds a 16mm b&w film roll which will open up a new world to him. The material shows the dictator Enver Hoxha and a young activist at a communist party youth congress. The activist is Sala’s mother Valdet. The sound track is missing and Valdet can no longer remember what she, as a fervent communist, once said in the interview following Hoxha’s appearance. Sala sets off in search of his mother’s lost language. “It appealed to me that I was dealing with a type of silent film. The whole thing was the perfect mirror image of the social changes that had affected my country and with this work I could react to them.” (Anri Sala)
