What You Get is What You See

Jan Verbeek’s installation “What You Get Is What You See”, in the context of all the other works and the fact of the disappearance of consumption as exchange market, shows in an astonishing way the production of capitalist surplus value. The video apparatus, which traces only acoustically the invisible path of a coin thrown in on request, finally captures how after a sevenfold fall a coin lands on a heap of money, actually generating through money’s loss an image’s analogous increase in value as it jadedly dreams of its own retirement . Decoupled and solitary, nothing works anymore and that only abstractly. Marion Kreißler, Martin Conrath
