Kinshasa 2.0

CD 2008

Kinshasa 2.0 focuses on the story of Marie-Thérese Nlandu, a human rights lawyer and former presidential candidate in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who was arrested, imprisoned and subsequently fled to the UK in 2006. The film follows her young niece who still lives in Kinshasa, where she regularly visits an internet café; the virtual reality platform Second Life has become the only space in which the young girl can communicate safely with the digital character of her exiled aunt. Far removed from its original objective to provide an online site for individual utopian fantasies, Second Life becomes a concrete space in which ‘First Life’ politics take place.
