Quietly he keeps to himself in the thirteenth cupboard at the Francke Foundation’s “Cabinet of Wonders” in Halle, Germany. He is a wax “mask” – a detailed impression lifted from the face of a living person two hundred years ago or more – now referred to as an “Unknown Man”. Despite the fact that we can still see the delicate wrinkles in the folds of the skin around his eyes, he has lost his identity. Was he once so famous that this was self-evident? When was his name forgotten – by whom? Who has looked for it? Since the time of Pietism and the Enlightenment to the GDR and today how have people identified with him? What can be learned by investigating the investigation of this citizen of Halle?
